How to Choose a Projector
Are you confused over the question of which projector is suitable for your home, education, or business use? It can be challenging to choose from different categories and hundreds of models in the market. Read along for a detailed guide on how to choose a projector.
Key Factors in Choosing a Projector
Before choosing a projector, you must know the primary purpose for which you need it. Any random projector would complete a display on the screen. However, there are optimum factors which a good one should be having. The following are some of the key factors in choosing a projector.
Most projectors use either DLP (Digital Light Processing) or LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technologies. DLP projectors do not make noise while in use and are relatively compact. They also have comparatively higher contrast ratios and are ideal for dusty environments.
The downside for DLP technology is the lack of clarity in color projection and its inability to give sharp images. If you want to use your projector for corporate presentations, do not choose a projector with this technology. Instead, go for one that uses LCD.
On their part, LCD projectors produce sharp images with an accurate color presentation. They also project brighter images with less lamp power compared to their DLP counterparts.
Their challenges include very low contrast ratios and a shorter lifespan. To make them last longer, you may have to avoid using them over long periods. I would not use mine for more than eight hours non-stop.
When choosing a projector to buy, go for the ones with the right resolution. A higher resolution gives your projector the ability to create clean images. This ability is due to the increased number of pixels that it uses to form the pictures.
The right resolution for your projector depends on the kind of detail you expect to get in the projected images. Home projectors are straightforward and do not require high resolutions. For corporate or educational projectors, high-resolution options such as Full HD, among others, are ideal.
The difference is due to the demands of the content that you intend to project. Corporate and educational content may include the following:
High volume text
These types of content require more pixels to project.
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) lumens are the unit for measuring projector brightness. Choose a projector with higher ANSI lumenssince it will be brighter.
A dark room is an ideal condition for the best projector results. Since this is not practically possible, you can improvise with curtains to prevent natural light from coming in. Should you fail to achieve the required darkness or get a brighter projector.
If your projector’s purpose is to display texts and graphs such as through PowerPoint, you will need a brighter projector. However, films do not require bright projectors.
Use the following brightness guidelines when selecting projectors for different purposes:
5000 Lumens and above for large venues like churches and public theatres
Over 3000 Lumens for the projection of clearer images such as in corporate boardrooms
Over 2000 lumens for classroom presentations
Over 1000 lumens for home theatre where you do not have dark rooms
Below 1000 lumens for very dark rooms
Images project in screens that are either vertical or horizontal, depending on the projector’s aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is a mathematical concept that calculates the height against the width within which images appear.
If the projector screen has an aspect ratio of 4:3, both the width and height are relatively shorter, hence a square screen. Similarly, a ratio of 16:9 indicates a more extended width and shorter height that makes the screen rectangular. The other most common aspect ratio is 16:10.
The project that you intend to project will determine the right aspect ratio for your projector. Projectors with 4:3 aspect ratios are more suitable for business-related purposes, while the 16:9 and 16:10 projectors are good for home use. The trick here is to choose a projector that allows you to use an aspect ratio you are comfortable with.
The projector contrast ratio refers to the light of its images compared to the darkness. A well-balanced contrast produces images with the right color shade and detail. The contrast ratio is different from contrast settings in that you can adjust settings, but you cannot change the maximum contrast ratio.
Choose a projector with a higher contrast ratio maximum if you want more freedom in setting contrast for specific projections. You can choose from among projectors with 1000:1, 3000:1, or 10000:1 contrast ratios.
Consider the type of device you will connect to your projector and how direct the connection would be. Most projectors have the HDMI connection option as default. With the dynamic technology that we are witnessing, it is good to have advanced connectivity options.
Choose a projector with all the possible connectivity options as follows:
Ability to connect using a mobile app
Simple USB connectivity
Ability to display information directly from a flash drive without a PC
The throw ratio refers to the image’s width against the distance of projection (throw distance). You can calculate it by dividing the throw distance by the width of the picture. The ratio depends on the purpose that you intend for your projector and the space available.
Since you can establish the image size and the distance, you intend to “throw” your projection, getting the throw ratio will be straightforward. This calculation will guide you in choosing the right projector whose lens ratio is within your estimations.
