How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on Computer and Phone

Being able to use dark mode in Google Sheets is a nice feature for many users.

It’s important to have the ability to do this because it makes the colors easier on the eyes at night or in low-light environments.

Since so many people are experiencing eye strain since smartphone screens are getting brighter, the dark mode has become a necessity for many of us.

It’s not just about aesthetics either, having this feature improves readability.

It’s time to bring your spreadsheets into the modern era, and in this video, I will show you a few different methods on how to turn on dark mode in Google Sheets on PC and on the phone.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on Computer

It is unfortunate, but on the desktop, there is no official dark theme for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

There is still a missing feature to enable the dark mode in the settings, but luckily, there are two ways to do it.

Enable Force Dark Mode on Google Chrome

As a Chrome user, you can use the Dark Mode as an experimental feature and enable it in the Chrome flags, but you should know that this will be applied to all websites.

If you still want to enable the dark mode then follow these steps:

STEP 1: Open chrome://flags on Google Chrome browser.

STEP 2: Find the feature called Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.

STEP 3: Click on the drop-down menu and enable the feature.

With this done, you can now run Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets on Google Chrome in a dark theme.

And not only Google Docs, but you will also have all the websites you are opening with Chrome in a dark mode.

Use Dark Mode Extension for Google Docs

While using chrome flags will enable dark mode for Google Docs and Sheets, it will also put all the websites you are seeing on Chrome to the dark.

But if you want to have dark mode only on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, then you can use a special third-party extension.

STEP 1: Open the Chrome Web Store on your browser.

STEP 2: Find an extension called Google Docs Dark Mode and install it.

This extension is designed for users who want a dark theme but don’t want to sacrifice functionality. The extension will only change the colors on the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides pages while leaving other websites unaffected.

How to enable dark mode in Google Docs, Slides and Sheets on Android and iOS

In order to switch to dark mode on your smartphone, simply go into Google Sheets settings and toggle the setting from light to dark.

This method works for both, Android and iPhone. Just follow these steps

STEP 1: Open the Google Sheets on your phone and tap the three dots menu.

STEP 2: Select Settings.

STEP 3: Under the Settings section, find the Theme (Choose Theme) and click on it.

STEP 4: Select the Dark variant from the options.

Done, now you have Google Sheets, Docs, and Slides with a dark mode.
