What’s an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is assigned to each device connected to a network. Like the street address for your home, the IP address helps to identify network computers. It allows the device to communicate with other devices over an IP-based network like the internet. (source)

An IP address is formatted as a series of four values separated by periods: 192.168.0.1

A public IP address – in most cases, your device gets a new IP address each time it connects to the internet.

A local IP address – assigned by your router to every device connected to it. The local IP address does work only within your local network and is not revealed on the internet.

 1. This is a particularly great solution if, for example, you had a games console in the basement that wasn’t getting sufficiently fast or reliable signal. The kit can plug right into the console’s ethernet connection and connect it to the router in another part of the house.mywifiext setup
