Is The Moto G7 Waterproof Smartphone?

SIMPLE ANSWER: No. The new phones of the Moto G7 series have no waterproof features. All these models have P2i water-repellent coating. This means that the phone provides protection against splashes, humidity in the air, or accidental submersions, but it can´t be submerged into the water for a longer time.

The Moto G series has been here since 2013, and it still successful among people who are looking for budget phones. Motorola skipped the spec race and rather concentrates on different aspects to make the phone experience good. And this approach pays off. There is something known as the P2P ratio – Price to Performance ratio. When you buy a smartphone, one of the things you have to ask yourself is “Is it worth the money?” When it comes to this question, the Moto G series clearly wins. It provides users with a clever mix of specs and low price.

Waterproofing is a new standard

That´s right. Most new phones that are coming on the market are designed to have some type of waterproof rating. That´s good news for many customers as water-resistant smartphones aren’t prone to accidental water damage and offer new opportunities in terms of both creativity and usability.

Take a closer look at any phone in a price range of $400+ and you will see that most of them come with IP67 or IP68 rating, where the IP68 is the best you can get. This rating is common for high-end phones such as iPhone XS, Samsung S10+ or Huawei P30 Pro.

IP, or Ingress Protection, is a universally accepted measurement of varying degrees for dust and liquid resistance. The first number refers to a device’s resistance to dust or dirt, while the second number stay for how well protected a device is from the water. For illustration, the IP68 rated device is protected during immersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes. Including splashing from a shower or an accidental (brief) dunking.

So, technically, even with the best IP68 rating, we are still talking about water-resistant devices. There isn´t a waterproof phone on the market. These phones are designed to not be easily harmed or affected by water or to not allow water to pass through easily. When subjected to enough pressure for enough time, every phone will fail in waterproofing tests.

Back to the Moto G7. The new G7 series comes with four models – Moto G7, high-end Moto G7 Plus, cheap Moto G7 Play and Moto G7 Power with awesome battery life. There are some differences between these phones, but one feature they have common. A P2i nano-coating.

What Is P2i Water Repellant Coating?

Modern smartphones need to have waterproof certification to withstand any possible water damage. The Moto G7 is not having the waterproof certification, but it offers a P2i water repellant coating which helps protect the phone against moderate exposure to water such as accidental spills, splashes, or light rain. It is NOT designed to be submerged in water, or exposed to pressurized water or other liquids; Moto G7, Moto G7 Power, Moto G7 Play, and Moto G7 Plus aren´t waterproof.

The P2i is a nanotechnology company that produces liquid repellent nano-coating protection to products for the electronics, lifestyle, life sciences, filtration and Energy, and military and institutional sectors.

As we mention above, all the Moto G7 phones have P2i water-repellent coating. That’s been true for the majority of Motorola phones for several generations, across the board. According to the official website: “The P2i nano-coating offers basic protection all electronic products should have. An invisible nanocoating applied to the fully assembled device, which protects every component inside and out. It increases reliability and durability over the product lifetime and provides everyday protection to prevent damage caused by exposure to humid environments, such as bathrooms, drinks spillage, light rain, and sweat. Typical devices that would benefit from this protection include smartphones and wearables.”

The P2i nano-coating isn´t comparable to IP68. With this IP rating, you have a phone that should withstand exposure of water for 30 minutes. That´s better than having a splashproof and dust resistant device. However, there is nothing wrong with the Motorola´s P2i water repellant coating, you just need to be aware of what this smartphone can or cannot withstand.

The Moto G7 will survive some water splashes, accidental drops of water or everyday use in the normal environment.
