The Nighthawk X4S is a very strong package, let down only by its slow 2.4GHz performance and antiquated admin software. Still, it has the goods where it really counts, as it was the fastest 5GHz router I tested and also the fastest for file transfers, which is what the majority of people would use it for. It also has next-gen features such as MU-MIMO and is relatively affordable too, making it my top pick for a high-end AC router.

The Netgear Nighthawk X4S Smart Wi-Fi Router R7800 is a capable choice for users who are ready to take advantage of MU-MIMO data-streaming technology and require a comprehensive set of management settings with a user-friendly interface.

The Netgear Nighthawk X4S is a feature-packed, powerful router that’s particularly good at taking on some NAS-like duties, thanks to its generous USB and SATA connections and good USB 3.0 data speeds. 5GHz range is pretty decent too.

Of all the Nighthawk routers I’ve reviewed, all things considered, the X4S is the best. The new router is super fast, has a long range with stable signals. If you have around 10 or so active Wi-Fi clients in a large home with a fast Internet connection, this router is a great choice.
By Digital Trends – 70%
The Nighthawk X4S offers MU-MIMO, meaning signal is sent directly to connected devices instead of broadcasting in all directions. Netgear advertises this router as ideal for large houses, which my two-bedroom townhome is not.

Overall then, the Nighthawk X4S takes three step forwards (design, performance, and reliability), with only one minor step back (aging software in dire need of an update).
By MBReviews – 87%
Since the first and second version of the Nighthawk X4, the new X4S feels miles ahead of its predecessors, having a stellar wireless performance, one of the best storage performances, the MU-MIMO technology, support for the 160 MHz bandwidth mode and even though, the interface can be considered a weakness, there is support for custom firmwares to make up for it.

The Netgear Nighthawk X4S D7800 is far from perfect. The software pales in comparison to some competitors’ efforts, and the USB performance could be better.
By LiveatPC – 86%
The Nighthawk is rather large in size, and can either placed on a solid surface or wall-mounted. Its main selling point is the MU-MIMO (Multi-User MIMO) function, a speedy solution that lets multiple users connect to a Wi-Fi router at the same time without having any speed degradations.
By TheTechReviewer – 80%
Netgear’s Nighthawk X4S is a high-end router that takes the design and functionality of the previous Nighthawk models and improves upon it with an updated feature set and internal hardware. A router of this caliber is overkill for some consumers, particularly those on a budget.

Just how much performance you want/need will depend on how much cash you have to shell out on a new router. If you have deep pockets and want performance, then the Netgear Nighthawk X4S is the one to go for.

With the R7800 Nighthawk X4S Smart WiFi Gaming Router, NETGEAR has produced its first all 4×4 AC2600 class router that, since it is Qualcomm-based, also has working MU-MIMO right from the start.

I was not prepared for the difference it makes to a home network over Wi-Fi N600 – amazing. It is particularly good in extending the range – probably because of the 5GHz channels. The router is able to achieve much more when compatible Wi-Fi equipped devices like laptop, tablet and smartphones are released with MU-MIMO capability.
