Expert reviews and ratings

Optoma’s new projector has some other impressive figures up its sleeve, too. Peak brightness is reckoned to be an unusually high 3000 lumens, while its contrast ratio is again a promising 28,000:1. Many potential buyers will also be attracted by its extremely short-throw lens, which can deliver a 100-inch image from a throw distance of just over a meter.

The Optoma GT1080Darbee is a great projector for not a lot of money. It offers a 1080P resolution at 60Hz, great for console gamers. The low input lag will make it feel just as smooth as playing on a monitor or TV. And you get full support for 3D content and outputting to better speakers.

This projector really shines when it comes time to play games. At a rated 16ms of input lag, gamers won’t have to sacrifice competitiveness when playing faster paced, more demanding games. This is a really strong selling point for this projector, as a lot of home theater projectors can introduce enough lag to start being noticeable when playing games.

I found the GT1080 easily bright enough fora 90-inch (diagonal) image in moderate ambient light. For smaller screen sizes or dimmer lighting, you can lower the brightness by switching to Eco mode or a lower-brightness predefined mode.

Getting great video from the GT1080 is only half the battle. Thankfully, the rest of the fight isn’t so bad thanks to its 10-watt built-in speaker. While not my first choice when listening to music, the low-fi speaker on offer here fills the need for a simple audio solution when watching TV shows or movies.

It’s easy to setup, bright enough for use in living rooms and great for gaming. If you want to watch sporting events and movies on the big screen, the GT1080 would also fit the bill.

The projector has a resolution of 1920x1080p. This is considered to be Full HD. Full HD graphics always look incredible. This is why HD has become the standard for visual media devices such as video game consoles, DVD and Blu-ray players, televisions, and projectors. HD graphics are what make your playthroughs of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One look so realistic.

The GT1080Darbee is a quality piece of hardware and it shows in every way possible. A flawless picture and low input lag combined with the short throw lens make for an unmissable piece of kit.

The GT1080 Darbee is an absolutely astounding projector that offers incredible performance in a somewhat surprisingly small package. For the quality of projection provided the heat output is to be expected, just make sure you use it in a well-aired area or things might just get a little toasty.

We used the projector for watching TV and films, and what a fantastic experience it was. My 5-year-old daughter thought that we were in the cinema and my 3-year old was particularly excited to see her favorite pig in all her full HD glory! I watched a WWE Live PPV on the 100″ projected screen, and it certainly added to the event.

The BIG advantage of the Optoma GT1080Darbee ($749) is its short throw lens. It can fill a 120″ diagonal 16:9 screen from just 4.3 feet, compared to the minimum of 10 feet needed for the HT2050A or 11.5 feet for the Epson 2150. At just 5.5 lbs, it is a couple of pounds lighter than the other two, so it is ideal for setting up quickly on a low table as needed.

At 3000 lumens, this projector is much brighter than most. No, you’re not going to be using it outdoors in full daylight. But you can still comfortably use it in a room with windows and the lights on. It’s not the brightest on the market.

The compact design makes the unit easy to pack up and move around without too much fuss, and it comes packaged inside a handy travel bag, which has enough space to hold a few accessories – such as HDMI cables and 3D glasses. In terms of connections, the GT1080 only has two HDMI inputs, with other ports on the unit reserved for hooking up a wireless emitter for the 3D glasses, connecting external speakers, and a 12v trigger to that can be used to control a motorized screen.
